| Years of less-than-fastidious maintenance in the Loew's certainly
left us with a lot of problems to deal with. But in one sense,
at least, had a bright side: It seems that several generations
of cleaning crews in the Loew's used to drop their sweepings
into heating vents on the floor, inadvertently leaving us a
treasure trove of artifacts to find as we began cleaning the
Theatre.
Some are pictured here. |

A tube of M&M's many didnt know that they where packaged
in tubes. Now we know |

two of the many gun wrappers that where found |

Not much has changed in this old favorate |

We found old cigarette packs of Lucky Strike Greens |
Many children seem to have literally lost their marbles
in the Loew's |
We even found what seemed to be the contents of a man's
wallet from the 1950s, including photographs and a driver's
license. Even more remarkably, we later found that the man
still lives In Jersey City!
Another interesting artifact is this wooden sign that was
part of a bond drive during World War II. It was found leaning
against the rear stage wall with the painted message facing
the wall so that it seemed to be nothing more than a wooden
panel. |

One other interesting find is a copy of the New York Daily
News from September 26, 1929 -- just two days before the Theatre
opened. We discovered it in a remote corner while tracing out
piping and wiring. We like to imagine that during the last frenzied
hours of preparing to open the Theatre for the first time, a
worker had snuck off to what seemed a safe hiding spot to relax;
he had just begun to read his newspaper when he heard his foreman
yelling for him. In his haste to run out, he dropped his paper,
where is lay unnoticed through most of the 20th century. Here
you see a headline from that paper talking about Wall Street;
ironic when we remember through the benefit of hindsight that
the Great Stock Crash loomed just a month away. |
And that brings us to the end of our virtual tour of the Loews
Jersey Theatre. We hope what you have enjoyed what you've seen and
learned. And we invite you to come and take a real tour on most
any weekend.
